Sie Liebt Dich – The Beatles’ German Gamble

Did you know The Beatles re-recorded “She Loves You”… in German?

In early 1964, The Beatles flew to Paris to record “Sie Liebt Dich” — because their German label, Odeon, believed English songs wouldn’t sell in Germany.

The session was done at EMI’s Pathé Marconi Studios in Paris — the only time The Beatles recorded outside the UK during their entire career.

The translation wasn’t done by the band — it was written by Camillo Felgen, under the pseudonym “Jean Nicolas,” to preserve the song’s rhyme and rhythm.

George Martin had forgotten to bring the original “She Loves You” master tape to Paris — so they had to re-record the entire backing track from scratch!

John and Paul weren’t thrilled with the idea. Lennon later joked that recording in German felt like “a waste of time,” as Beatlemania had already hit Germany hard.

“Sie Liebt Dich” was officially released in West Germany in March 1964 — but didn’t chart in the UK or U.S., though collectors today highly prize the single.
